LETTER TO THE CITY
To whom it may concern:
RE: development and evictions of 1770 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC, V6G1W4
The building located at 1770 Davie Street (“Berkley Towers”) is a building of 15 floors of affordable, below-market rate rental units, occupied by tenants some of whom have lived there for 20, 30 or even 40 years (the “tenants”). All of its tenants are currently under threat of eviction, by a landlord who claims the evictions are necessary to complete renovations. The tenants’ have told the landlord, in writing, they would temporarily move out, if necessary, so the renovations could be completed without having to end their tenancies. We are asking the City of Vancouver (the “City”) to intervene through the permitting process so these renovations can proceed without anyone losing their homes unnecessarily.
On June 22nd, 2018, Reliance Properties Ltd. (“Reliance”) delivered notices to each of the individual tenants of Berkley Towers that they would need to evict each tenant in order to complete necessary renovations for the building. The staged renovations and consequent evictions would begin in the spring of 2019.
On August 7 th, 2018, the tenants collectively wrote to Reliance indicating a willingness to accommodate their renovations, including temporarily moving out, so the renovations could be completely without ending tenancies. A copy of that letter is attached.
